Dear Bucky- I never know what to wear

October 7, 2012

Dear Bucky,

I don’t know what I want to wear. Getting dressed in the morning is such a hassle. Help!

Dear Indecisive,

I don’t know how old you are…but it’s time to put on your big girl panties and start making decisions. Even though getting dressed in the morning is a seemingly simple activity, for some people it can be stressful and let’s be real: the last thing you need before the day has even started is stress. So, follow these simple little tips and start enjoying your mornings.

1) Think about one thing you absolutely WANT to wear. This isn’t difficult. It’s whatever pops into your head first (think gut feeling). Examples of this would  be: I really feel like wearing some boots today. or I really feel like wearing tights…or a skirt..etc. It can even be something like: I feel like wearing a sweater today.  For the sake of example, let’s say you want to wear boots.

2) Once you have something in mind, build off of that. What goes with the boots? Do you like to wear a certain skirt with the boots you like? What shirt goes well with the boots and skirt? Now, what jewelry looks good? Purse? When you build your outfit one piece at a time it’s not so overwhelming.

Also- consider taking a couple hours for yourself on a weekend to try on different outfits. Think of it as playing dress-up. Put together a lot of different looks (you never know what something looks like until you try!) and remember the ones you like. If you have a terrible memory take pictures. Then you will have go-to outfits for those days when you just can’t make a decision.

If you have trouble putting outfits together, look through magazines and your favorite websites (Refinery29 and LuckyMag.com are good places to start) for some help.

One last tip: Keep your clothes and accessories organized! If you can’t see what you options are, getting dressed becomes a nightmare. Think of your closet as a little boutique and try to make everything accessible.

Love, Bucky
